Book tickets and tours →The last entry to the palace is one hour before closing, and to the gardens 30 minutes before closing. In the season when the palace closes at 17:00, that means going in by 16:00, so for the full 2 to 2.5 hours arrive well before that.
The official site gives about 2 hours for the palace with its gardens in one place and 2 to 2.5 hours in another, so we write 2 to 2.5 hours. The Pont d'Avignon takes about 40 minutes, and a visit to both is about 3 hours, which is our own sum, not an official figure.
Every July the Cour d'honneur becomes a theatre for the Festival d'Avignon. The hours on the official site stay at 09:00 to 19:00 in July, but it does not say whether the route changes during the festival: check before you plan a visit that month.
The official site gives no visitor numbers by time of day, so we cannot tell you the quietest hour. The official site recommends booking ahead, though it is not compulsory, and says that the palace is busy in high season.
